CRB Checks

I have previously always had CRB checks through the NHS. I am now self-employed and would welcome suggestions as to how I (and others who work with me) can get a CRB check!

Many thanks, namaste,

Julia

Julia, it is an interesting dilemma. I too am self-employed, however I also belong to the British Wheel of Yoga and they use a firm to get credit checks. I don't know whether that would prohibit others using them too? It costs about £45 for the check. If you are teaching Baby Yoga, presumably the mothers or fathers are present, so do you need a check? Dear Julia

I am at present going through the process. I too have a CRB check through the NHS but it is not valid for self-employment purposes. I am with both the British Wheel and Yoga Scotland. I have completed an Enhanced Disclosure form which goes to the firm that Yoga Scotland has handed the business over to. I have to send various documents with the application and it is costing me £30 and will be renewable on a 3 yearly basis, I believe. The British Wheel informed me, when I rang them, that as from October, even if parents are in the room, I have to have this disclosure and also each parent has to sign a special form giving consent for me to touch a baby (for whatever reason!). Sounds ridiculous but this is what is now required by the insurance. I am wondering if there are similar arrangements through Birthlight if your insurance is with them.

Thanks Penny - I agree with you in the sense that I or the other therapists I work with are never alone with the children, but I also do sessions at other places who usually ask, plus i would like to be able to explicitly say that all my therapists who work with children have enhanced checks. I would just like really to identify a company that is reputable and reliable. I will investigate who BWY use/

Thanks for the advice,

Julia

Thanks Judy - I am insured and registered through IFPA as aromatherapy is my other main therapy. I have e-mailed IFPA to see if they offer CRB checks, but I don't think so.

I may be able to register my business (I run a complenetary heaht clinic and yoga studio) as a company and get checks through an umbrealla organisation, but suspect this may be beyond my budget at the moment!
