Hi I have a student who is 20 weeks pregnant and suffering with hyperemesis. She enjoys coming to the pregnancy yoga classes but is also continuing with her Ashtanga classes as well. I feel that she should stop Ashtanga as she needs to rest and maintain her strength but don't know how to tell her and her Ashtanga teacher is just giving her modifications for her practice and encouraging her to still come to the class. Also, are there any tips/remedies I could suggest to her?

Hi Michele as discussed on the PY3 day the best option for a pregnant woman who is affected by hyperemesis is to settle her neuro-endocrinian system as much as possible. This condition is complex, sometimes more mechanical depending on the loosening of the oesophagus, sometimes more bio-chemical/hormonal, I am not sure whether anyone has a clear answer. Only 2-3% of pregnant women suffer from hyperemesis and only 10% of these continue to vomit after 20 weeks so I hope that the woman in your class is not in this very unlucky subset. Re stopping Ashtanga: this depends on whether she is losing weight, which is of course not good news. If it is between Ashtanga practice and taking medication for pregnancy sickness, or anti-depressants, then perhaps Ashtanga is better! Could you recommend a greater focus on breathing and relaxation in Mysore practice? It would be ideal to encourage this woman to do 10 minutes of quiet full yoga breathing in a supported aligned sitting position three times a day. This could have great results! All best wishes for now and please keep posting on developments. Francoise.
