I had a client who had 2 vessels (1 artery) instead of 3 vessels (2 arteries) in the umbilical cord. I read that this affects the development and weight gain of the baby. She ended up having a c-section at around 32 or so weeks (not sure) because the baby stopped gaining weight. According to research I have read, it says that perinatal yoga can help the baby gain good weight. I now know someone else who is carrying twins, the one baby has the same thing, only 2 vessels and is already underdeveloped at 14 weeks. I am not sure if there is anything special (yoga practices) I could use to help such a situation. What can yoga do to help and can it?

Hello, the way that yoga helps babies gain weight, mostly in the third trimester of pregnancy, is through the mother's relaxation. It seems that sadly one of the twins is not growing as much as the other, which is not uncommon but of course always very distressful for parents. If Yoga can help the mother to remain calm, centred and full of love for her two little ones, then whatever the future holds, it will be better for everyone. As yoga teachers we need to be careful about creating positive situations with yoga but not illusions that maybe yoga can fix umbilical cords. Wishing you and this mother and baby the best, Francoise.
