Hello Francoise and fellow Birthlighters. Now I've invited mums in my classes to share their post natal issues I've opened the floodgates! This week is from 2 mums with painful hips (babies are 5 months) and both are in a lot of discomfort to say the least. Mum 1 -Moving the legs backwards and forwards is fine but abduction and rotating the hips outwards causes the pain. Mum 2 is only comfortable 'sitting like a Queen' in Vajrasana with legs splayed out to the side. She finds it painful to get up and down from sitting. I've covered alignment and sitting poses with knees in & parallel. Any other suggestions as this seems to be a common complaint. Thanks x

Hi Julie isn't it a shock to realise how many new mums experience serious physical discomfort months after giving birth?! Postnatal yoga well done can be therapeutic. I would suggest reduce the range of hip movement of Mum 1 from the classic poses to micro circles inwards and outwards done standing with support from wall or something suitable, to restore tone and elasticity in the pelvic ligaments between SI joint and hip joint on each side. Tiny steps (feet in feet out, zigzag feet) also work and should not cause pain). For Mum 2 it seems to be SI pain on one side that needs to be addressed, you might try small knee circles and small movements like slalom skying to disinflame the area of discomfort. It's not easy to make suggestions without seeing these mums but the moves I have mentioned are very small and safe and if done at home through the day there should be an overall improvement but of course structural issues may still need to be addressed. Please remember that Utkasana is the wonder postnatal pose for mums with pelvic discomfort ! all best wishes Francoise.
