Teen Mum School

A couple of weeks ago Amanda Walker and I (Dolphin Baby Swim School, Cambridge) were invited to give a swimming class to a group of teenagers with their babies. Granada Television are currently filming a programme called Teen Mum School where a group of teenagers are staying in a beautiful private house in Lincolnshire. They have undertaken certain activities such as a Baby Yoga session, which was run by Alison Duff, Birthlight Peterborough, and a swimming session run by Amanda and I.

The baby’s ages ranged from 3 months to 18 months, so Amanda and I thought we would split the classes in age group. However when we arrived a couple of the mums did not want to enter the water as one had just had another baby and the other was frightened of entering the water with their baby. I talked to the frightened mother and suggested that I would take her baby in the water and she could watch on the side. When she had gone out of ear shot I mentioned to Amanda that I wanted to get her in the water with her baby as this is what Birthlight is all about.

Amanda and I decided that we would have the entire group in the pool together as it was such a small group. We ended up giving one to one tuition and helped the mums with holds and showed the mums how they could swim with their babies.

I looked after the frightened mums little baby who was about 10 months old and his first time in the water. He was a little nervous but after introducing him to a ball he started to kick and really enjoy himself in an open arm swim. I encouraged the mum to sit on the side where there were some steps and to play with us. She did this and got all wet!! I asked if she wanted to come in and she did. It was a beautiful experience to watch them both bonding together in the water for the first time.

Amanda taught the rest of the group and had a great time with one of the mums who had mentioned that she did not want to get her hair wet! By the end of the session her hair was soaking, she had make up running down her face and a big smile!

The programme will be televised at the end of the summer on ITV.

Well done Carla, Amanda & Alison, a very rewarding experience. Do let us know the dates, there will more than likely be a web link for those who are not able to see the programme at the time of broadcast.

I have just watched a section on Meridian news which featured two of my toddler swimmers plus their 21 day old sister who is currently with Little Dippers. How enchanting it was to see them all so at home in and under the water, with Adam (3 years) really performing for the camera. Really made me smile even though it was not promoting my swim school!
